Celebrity KIA Cyclethon in support of the Smile Foundation comes to Port Elizabeth
(JOHANNESBURG) October 20, 2017 – Getting active always feels good. But it feels even better when it’s for a good cause. Port Elizabeth residents will be doing just that when the KIA Cyclethon in support of the Smile Foundation comes to town at Baywest Mall this Saturday, 21 October 2017.
Shoppers and spinning fans are invited to join some of their favourite celebrities, including Algoa FM Sports Editor, Neil Bissiker, in the hot seat as they spin their way through the afternoon, raising some much-needed funds for the Smile Foundation at the same time.
Sportsman and Smile Foundation Sport Ambassador, Keith Buhr, will MC the event. Keith is a familiar face in the local community, and an active supporter and promoter of the foundation and the important work it does.
The Smile Foundation is an NGO dedicated to helping children with treatable facial anomalies gain access to the therapy, surgery and post-operative care they need to live happy lives. The foundation’s work includes assisting children with conditions such as cleft lip and palate, Moebius syndrome (facial paralysis), microtia (underdeveloped ears) and other conditions, as well as children who have been scarred as a result of burn injuries.
To facilitate these surgeries and reach as many children in need as possible, the foundation works through the country’s academic and provincial hospitals – including the Port Elizabeth Provincial Hospital. Funds raised from the KIA Cyclethon will be used to benefit children from the Eastern Cape who are in desperate need of surgery.
“There is such a need for these surgeries in the Eastern Cape. Many of these children have been waiting for years for these operations, which have the power to literally change their lives. We are so grateful to our generous sponsors, including our headline sponsor, KIA, as well as Viva Gym, Planet Fitness, Magnetic Storm, Baywest Mall, Nutritech and Stuttafords Van Lines. Without their help and of course, the energetic input of the very enthusiastic and supportive PE community, this cyclethon wouldn’t be possible and our work in the Eastern Cape not nearly as effective,” explains Smile Foundation CEO, Hedley Lewis.
The KIA Cyclethon takes place from 16:00 to 19:00 at the Baywest Mall food court. Sessions cost R160 per person, per bike, per hour. Booking is essential.
