Couple in taxi from OR Tambo robbed and injured
A couple who got into a taxi at OR Tambo airport on Sunday (18 June 2017) was sent to hospital after three armed men attacked them and fled with various valuables.
According to IOL the taxi was making its way to the couple’s hotel in Morningside in Sandton before things took a turn for the worst and the armed men opened fire on them.
IOL also reported that according to Gauteng police spokesperson, Captain Mavela Masondo, the robbers in the BMW had been following the Corolla from the airport.

“The guys (robbers) opened fire on them during the course of the robbery. There was a scuffle between the robbers and the couple. The couple were allegedly resisting handing over their belongings,” said Masondo.
The valuables taken from the couple included jewellery, cash, cellphones and their suitcase with clothing.
“Sunday’s robbery was the latest in a string of incidents involving people targeted by armed criminals and robbed while travelling from the airport,” reported IOL.
“Masondo said the wounded couple were taken to hospital and were reported to be in a serious but stable conditions. The driver escaped unharmed.”
Although the taxi driver was an Uber-driver partner, Uber has confirmed that he was not online during the trip and that it was a private trip organised between the couple and the driver, and therefore “not an Uber trip as it was not booked through the Uber app.”
