London traffic halved over the last 15 years, bicycles tripled!
Just 15 years ago the amount London traffic was double what it is now. Partly because, apart from public transportation, cycling is also a viable solution!
Transport for London – a local government body, recently issued a long and well documented report of everything related to London traffic over the past few years.
London has experienced a population boom over recent years, like most other major cities in the western world. This is due to the high levels of people constantly moving in to take advantage of jobs or even to start their own businesses.
The London traffic was particularly bad due to the urban planning being conducted over a hundred years ago. The huge influx of people resulted in the London traffic becoming unbearable due to bottlenecks occurring around the crowded streets.
The Transport for London analysis discovered that there were twice the amount of cars 15 years ago, compared to today. So how did everyone even move back then?
People came to the realization that public transport was not the only means of getting around. Cycling is also a very viable option. Commuting on a bicycle in a country that has notoriously bad weather, may not seem like the wisest ideas. Although it seems like the Brits have taken out their raincoats and started to peddle!
During the last 15 years, the amount of constant cyclists have tripled. From only 12 000 cyclists in 2000, to more than 36 000 in 2014 and the trend looks like it’s only rising!
Cars dropped from 137 000 in 2000 to 64 000 in 2014. Some believe that by 2020 the amount of bicycle users on the road will surpass the amount of car drivers! Great for London traffic and great for the environment!
