Road safety accountability – urging road users to take note!
The Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) have stated that urgent action is needed to address road safety. Government and road users must be informed of their road safety accountability
South Africa sees another disastrous weekend on the country’s roads. In Westonaria, Gauteng – one incident alone claimed 19 lives. The cost of these road accidents is immeasurable and requires citizens to take road safety accountability while driving.
New strategies to combat drunk driving required!
“It is becoming all too common that we hear of crashes and deaths on our roads every weekend. Week in and week out there are multiple deaths as a result of motor vehicle crashes and something needs to be done to address this as a matter of urgency,”
the AA commented.

The AA further stated, that there are well documented road safety accountability strategies, that need to be enforced in order to ensure safer roads.
Adding that,
“It is time for the government to step in and act. We need, for instance, better enforcement to prevent bad user behaviour, improved statistical information to measure progress and success, well-maintained roads, and better education of all users including pedestrians. We believe more can be done to deal with the current situation,”
Holiday road safety – stay safe this festive season!
While it is vitally important that the government plays their role, it is equally as important for road users to play theirs. People need to take road safety accountability for their driving.
“Not enough road users follow the rules. On a daily basis we all see drivers whose tyres are in a poor condition, who use their cellphones while driving, who don’t buckle up or who don’t obey the speed limit, or indeed any rules of the road. In many cases pedestrians walk across busy roads without looking or walk in the road when a pavement is available. These behaviours can be improved through ongoing education.”
Make sure you know what to do if your car overheats!
Making sure that the correct statistics about road fatalities and crashes are made public, is also critical in making people aware of their road safety accountability. It illustrates the dangers present on our roads and can act as a clear indication, as to when an intervention is required.
The AA concluded by saying,
“With the festive season holidays around the corner many hundreds of thousands of people will be on the road. We do not believe this year will be any different to previous years and, unfortunately, we are concerned that crashes and fatalities will remain high unless urgent action is taken.”
