Sanral’s appeal over right to toll the Winelands route dismissed
If you enjoy venturing out to the Winelands every so often, you’ll be glad to hear that Sanral has lost their appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeal over the right to toll the Winelands.
Nearly a year ago the Western Cape High Court set aside approvals that would allow Sanral to toll certain highways leading to the Winelands.

According to News24 Sanral appealed against the judgement over the right to toll the N1 and the N2 highways in August.
The court dismissed the application for leave to appeal against the refusal to submit further affidavits.
“The city’s stance is that according to the Sanral Act, only the Sanral board can declare a toll road. The board allegedly did not do this,” said News24.
The roads agency claimed that the planned upgrades for the roads would have left R2 billion short of the R10 billion needed. It was also reported that the Western Cape is the only province with permission from the National Treasury to implement a fuel levy to pay for roads, but that it has not yet been implemented.
Brett Herron, City of Cape Town councillor, said on Wednesday the ruling is the city’s second legal victory against Sanral, and should this strongly suggests that the agency has reached the end of the road as far as the Winelands tolling project is concerned.
