Which of SA’s top selling cars has the best fuel efficiency?
With fuel prices constantly on the rise, as well as the long term effects on the planet from using fossil fuels – it is now more important than ever to maximise one’s fuel efficiency.
Drive South Africa recently released a report detailing the fuel efficiency of each of South Africa’s top ten most sold cars, as of May 2015.
We summarised these results into the below graph – showing you how much each of these cars will cost you for every 100 km you travel.
Below is a table showing, the amounts sold for each of these best sellers:
The report by Drive South Africa also states that, “All grades of petrol increased by 47 cents per litre this month” and that they, “selected the vehicle model with the lowest fuel consumption in its category, based on litres per 100km.”

Here are some easy tips on how you can drive more efficiently:
- Drive sensibly – rapid acceleration and braking uses up to 33% more fuel at highway speeds (and 5% when driving around town.)
- Don’t speed, fuel efficiency in most vehicles is maximised between 80-100km/h. Going faster can rapidly increases your fuel consumption.
- Remove unnecessary weight from your car, especially things like roof racks or anything else that will increase wind resistance.
- Check your tyres regularly! If your tyres are lacking air pressure, your car’s engine has to work harder.
- Make sure you service your car regularly, when everything is working as it should your car’s engine will be at its most efficient.
