This is what can happen after the devastating #CapeFire
Cape Town’s houses and roads in the area of the #CapeFire could be in danger after the fire ravaged a big part of the Southern Peninsula over the period of a week.
Now that the fire is almost completely burned out, the lack of vegetation after the fire could mean landslides for Cape Town’s roads.
Professor John Compton, a biochemist at the University of Cape Town, explained, “If that happens, it comes down as a mass movement of rock and sand and everything that goes into soil, and it buries homes and roads.
SA Breaking news reported that preventative measures would need to be put in place such as those used after the last major fire in January 2000. These include sleepers, logs along contours, and netting.
Compton said the fire is important for the regeneration of the mountains natural vegetation.
“Although it looks stark and terrible afterwards, it doesn’t take long before the new sprouts come up and the hill slopes become revegetated.”
