E-tolls UPDATE – 7 things you need to know!
The government announced the new e-tolls dispensation on May 20th, here’s what you need to know:
1. All cars are deemed registered, but direct registration will benefit drivers. Drivers who do not directly register will pay more the next time they renew their licenses.
2. Users with e-tags and SANRAL accounts will pay:
18c/km for motorcycles,
30c/km for light vehicles,
75c/km for medium/heavy vehicles and
150c/km for large/heavy vehicles.
3. Reduced monthly cap for all users:
R125 (down from R280) for motorcycles,
R225 (down from R450) for light vehicles,
R875 (down from R1750) for medium/heavy vehicles and
R2900 (down from R3500) for large/heavy vehicles.
4. Infrequent visitors to Gauteng are granted 30 free gantry passes per year, after which payment will be due for the proceeding 30 gantry passes.
5. Users who do not pay within 30 days of the invoice – will then be liable to pay double the toll tariff – reaching a cap of double the normal monthly cap.
6. Discounts for outstanding e-toll bills since December 2013 will be reduced by 60% (R1.74/km to 0.70/km).
7. Failure to pay tolls will result in drivers’ license disks not being issued until they have paid their accounts.
