Proof that Gauteng drivers are the speedsters
Kwa-Zulu Natal officials now have ‘proof’ that Gauteng motorists are the speedsters when it comes to traffic fines. Times live reported that almost half a million fines, valued at more than R36 m, were issued for speeding along the N3 highway in KwaZulu-Natal last year. And about 54 786 notices of fines are on their way to motorists, most of them from Gauteng, for speeding on the N3 last month.
Other than this, the speeding stats are really shocking: KwaZulu-Natal department of transport spokesman Nathi Sukazi said speed-trap cameras recorded about 480 000 speeding violations last year. The cameras on the N3 between Nottingham Road and Tweedie recorded the most violations.
And for Cape Town, it doesn’t look much better: Cape Town mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith said 229 6207 fines, with a total value of more than R1 billion, were issued last year in the city . Cape Town Traffic Services arrested 2 999 motorists for drunken driving last year.
Sukazi said the department planned to install cameras on the N2.
“Fixed cameras are effective for short distances. Motorists are inclined to slow down for the cameras – usually warned about the devices through Garmins and other technologies – and accelerate after passing the camera.
Road Traffic Management Corporation chief executive Makhosini Msibi said the number of violations confirmed that more had to be done to change the attitudes of motorists.
