This after news that the road death toll has decreased significantly compared to road fatality numbers from last year’s Easter weekend.
Last week President Jacob Zuma also appealed to all road users to take road safety seriously and to comply with all road rules and regulations.
Road death toll numbers down
Last week the Road Transport Management Corporation (RTMC) reported that the road death toll was already the lowest it had been in five years with a drop of 62% for the Easter holiday period.
Between last year and this year the road death toll numbers dropped from 22 road fatalities to 6 in the Western Cape.
However, drunken driving still remains a challenge, according to the Road Traffic Management Corporation’s, Simon Zwane .
On Saturday (27 March) East Coast Radio reported that more than 1000 motorists were caught driving while under the influence of alcohol.
“It is the end of the month which means people have money. Those who have not gone to church are sitting around drinking and get into their vehicles and drive”, said Simon Zwane.
Kenny Africa grateful to all motorists
Yesterday Kenny Africa told Cape Talk radio that only one person was arrested in the Western Cape this weekend for doing an excessively high speed and this was in the Southern Cape in George where he hit a speed of 173km in a 120km zone.
“We would really like to thank our motorists for excellent behaviour on our roads over this Easter weekend. The fact that they adhere to our call not to take unnecessary chances.”
