Stone throwing on the N2 – How you can avoid it!
After Monday’s stone throwing incident on the N2, we asked ourselves – how can one avoid this situation? Even if you are aware of it, how should you react?
Check out the latest in road safety technology!
We spoke to Johan Jonck from Arrive Alive, asking exactly these questions. He had the following advice to give:
“A pleasure to assist:
There is little that we can do in many of these situations. I would like to share a few pieces of advice though.
Pre-planning:
- If at all possible to avoid these situations – do so!
- Follow the media and news reports and if you hear of unrest in an area – avoid the roads in that area.
If stone throwers are on a bridge / if you see people looking suspicious stationary on a bridge – approach slower than the speed limit initially in the lane below them and then change lanes close to the bridge further away from them [with due regards to the safety of others].
Emergency numbers to have when driving on the N2!
Always advisable to increase the time and space available for response – reduce speed and increase following distance from other vehicles.
Also when you note people close to the road – drive in the lane further away from them.. increase the distance from them
If stuff is thrown at the vehicle or on the surface of the road – the criminal intention most often is to bring your vehicle to a stop – if at all possible continue driving to a safe spot to attend and report damage to your vehicle!
How far can you drive on a flat tyre?
Golden Rule – increase alertness, avoid driver distractions –remain focused!!”
