Fancy a Free State road trip? Here are 5 routes to consider
In the heart of South Africa lies the Free State, which should definitely not be overlooked when planning a SA road trip. There are so many beautiful sights to see and so much exploration to do, so here it goes – our road trip suggestions continues…
With the Kingdom of Lesotho close by, you’ll also find the Vaal and Orange River to its North and South – so expect some spectacular scenery and pit-stops as you try out these awesome routes.
1. The historical N6 route for the culture fanatics
This route takes you from Reddersburg in the Free State all the way to East London in the Eastern Cape. On this route you’ll be able to explore more interesting remnants of the Anglo-Boer War. In the town of Smithfield, you can get in touch with your creative side as you encounter its charming network of artists. Further along, Rouxville is pure Karoo in spirit and architecture. The majestic Maluti Mountains and the fringes of the Great Karoo will give you some spectacular moments to capture.
2. Bloemfontein to Kimberly
In this fantastic 2-hour drive you’ll head to the Diamond Mine city in Kimberley to explore its rich history. One can explore the famous Big Hole, equivalent to approximately 8 rugby fields. This historical heritage site spreads through from the Kimberly Mine Museum, to the oldest Kimberly Museum Belgravia. There are a lot of museums, wildlife parks and historical sites to go visit in Kimberley.
3. En route to Clarens
The route is about an hours drive from Bloemfontein. Golden Gate Highlands National Park is in the western foothills of the Maloti-Drakensberg with wildebeest, springbuck and Burchells adding to the experience of this scenic route. Here you can explore the large historical Cathedral cave. If you’re a hiker this is for you, you can hike up the Ribokkop, which is the highest point in the bank. Mountain biking, horse riding or game drives are some of the enjoyable experiences on hand.
4. Bloemfontein to Lesotho.
This is for the adventurers. With this trip you will go to the Maletsunyane Falls in Lesotho which is just over two hours drive from Bloemfontein and will lead you to the beautiful Lesotho and its capital Maseru. Some of the attractions include Lancer’s Gap for spectacular panoramic views, the notorious Sani Pass which is best travelled with a 4×4, and Africa’s second largest dam the Katse found on the Malibamat’so River. There is also a ski-resort, so if you want adventure- this is a must do road trip!
5. Small town vibes
If you love the magical feeling of a charming small town, we propose you go visit all the small towns and villages in this state. You can even pick and choose which towns you want to visit and which towns you want to give a skip. Springfontein, Jagersfontein, Fauresmith and Koffiefontein are a few very cute towns we can suggest you visit. There is always lots to do and a lot to learn from these historical little towns.
