The perfect travel ideas for Spring
Spring is the time when South Africa and the surrounding areas come to life, showing off the majestic beauty in its plants and animal life, in its long, epic vistas and mountain ranges. It is this beauty and natural wonder that has made South Africa known around the world; it’s what makes us win numerous awards from tourism sites and magazines.
These unique species – of both animal and plant life – found nowhere else in the world can usually be found showing off their unique behaviour and looks, when the sun is high and the skies a piercing blue. But sometimes to experience these, you need to also do some travelling – yet it’s the journey itself that deserves our admiration.
Karoo highlands
An important and well-known area of focus has been the Karoo. Travelling through the Karoo highlands, you get to experience all the great elements of the desert. The route goes though Karoo towns such as Matjiesfontein, Sutherland, Williston, Carnarvon and Beaufort West . It’s known, mostly , as the Great Karoo.
This is an area that covers 400 000km². It is an area where people have been living and surviving for thousands of years, so you will experience ancient caves paintings and habitats, as well as famous desert conditions and animals, like kestrels, baboons, ostriches and aardvarks.
This is a desert, though, and the route will be long and hot. It is advisable to have a proper 4×4 vehicle, with tarpaulin or a bakkie canopy, to protect your belongings from the harsh conditions.
Rixile Bush to Beach Route
This is a route taking you from South Africa through to Mozambique. The name itself describes what you will experience: travelling through wild African bush to reach a gloriously blue and majestic destination. Starting at Phalaborwa, it winds through the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park, through the towns of Massingir, Chókwe and Xai-Xai. It then heads north to Inhambane and Vilankulo. This brilliant tourism suggestion shows a unique way of giving the best of the bush and the beach – this means you should prepare for differing conditions so you should pack correctly and use the correct kind of vehicle. We recommend you dress warm – despite it being spring – and take enough water due to varying levels of hydration, in differing climates.
The Coastal Route
Of course, some prefer to use the warmer months as an opportunity to get as close to the sea as possible. A coastal drive, therefore, might be perfect. The Eastern Cape, with its virus-free and expansive landscape, has a route that allows tourists to be right by the ocean. Starting at Tstsikamma, it will take you through famous attractions like Tsitsikamma National Park, Addo elephant National Park, the Sunshine Coast, through the village of Hogsback before the beaches of the incredible Wild Coast. You are advised to pack plenty of towels and beach gear, to aid you.
