Bugatti Veyron crash was insurance fraud

It was reported that a man who drove his Bugatti Veyron into a lake was actually committing insurance fraud.

The Bugatti owner thought he had got away with a perfect insurance scam, purchasing the $1.6 million (R17 m) super car only to crash it a month later into a Texas salt water lake and claim a $2.4 million (R25 m) insurance policy.

In his claim he said he had seen a bird fly by causing him to swerve and drive into the lake. But, unfortunately for him someone had filmed the whole event, and on the video there was no bird in sight (never underestimate how technology may ruin your dreams). Subsequently, the video was viewed four million times, so when the insurance investigators called in the FBI, fraud was soon uncovered.

A United States Attorney Office statement read: “Andy Lee House pleaded guilty to an information charging him with wire fraud before U.S. Magistrate Judge Keith Giblin. “House faces up to 20 years in federal prison at sentencing.”

Under US law, wire fraud is defined as “obtaining money or property by means of false or fraudulent pretences.”

Moral of the story? Try not to commit insurance fraud in broad daylight with a super car that people might want to film…
