BMW 2 Series driving review
The BMW 2 Series is what used to be the 1 Series coupé, but BMW has changed its naming strategy. The company has given all its four-door sedans the odd numbers (1, 3, and 5 Series) while its three-door coupé models get the even numbers (2 and 4 Series). So what we essentially have here is a two-door 1 Series. Except it’s now the 2 Series.
Despite it being a coupé version of the 1 Series, the 2 Series has its own distinctive look with a long nose, and low-slung silhouette, frameless windows and a stretched roofline. The result is a sportier look all around. Inside, you’ll see that its all-very BMW – the company’s signature look for the instrument cluster, neatly laid out controls and chrome accents.
If you think that diesel cars can’t feel quick and sporty, think again. This 220d with it’s 2,0-litre turbodiesel pushes out 135 kW and has 380 N.m from 1 750. So, basically, all the torque is available to you almost immediately when you push the throttle. As a result, you can make quick overtaking manoeuvres and you won’t need to change gears as often to reach the speed that you want to get to. The eight-speed automatic transmission is slick and smooth and works through the gears with relative ease. Should performance be your thing, BMW claims that this vehicle is capable of sprinting from zero to 100 km/h in 7,1 seconds and has a top speed of 230 km/h.
One of the big selling points on a diesel car is the low consumption level. BMW claims that the 220d consumes 4,2 litres/100 km. Keep in mind that this number is achieved under ideal conditions, so what 220d owners would get in reality would be a bit higher than that. But it shouldn’t differ by too much.
Overall, the 220d is a stylish and sporty vehicle. It will get you to where you want to be with ease, in comfort and thanks to its strong engine and handing capabilities, you can have loads of fun on the way. It’s one of the better models in the 2 Series range.
