Car Review: Ford Mustang
The iconic Ford Mustang! Who wouldn’t feel cool driving one of these? Well, me. That’s right! I did not feel cool. It has always been on my bucket list of cars to drive but for some reason I became anxious and sweaty and the minute I noticed all eyes were on me I reverted in to myself and found myself wishing that I was driving a plain ol’ car, one that no one would notice.
But why on earth did I care so much? I feel this a thread I shouldn’t pull on so let’s veer away from my insecurity complex and stay on track. Ah a track, now that is where I would have loved to have driven the Mustang. A lone track! I would have been able to enjoy the 306 kW of power and the 530 N/m of torque that the 5,0 V8 GT produces. It’s a car that requires will power because all you want to do is open it up and see what it can do but the laws of the road forbid you to do this. It is all so tempting and so frustrating at the same time.
I was driving a bright yellow Mustang, or Triple Yellow as Ford calls it, but there are ten colours to choose from. Why you would choose yellow is beyond me, but each to their own. It sure turns heads and if driving a Mustang is not enough for you well then you need to go for the yellow or Competition Orange…and possibly see a therapist. And if you aren’t interested in what a Mustang can do but only in what it looks like, then why spend the R839 900 on the 5,0? You can opt for the 2,3-litre EcoBoost engine and still look cool.
It sounds as if I don’t love this car, I do! It was the attention I didn’t love. But once you get over that, there really isn’t anything not to love. For goodness sakes, you are driving a car that has been in more than 9 000 movies, TV games and music videos. It is what dreams are made of! It’s the ultimate muscle car! It is THE car on every one’s bucket lists. It was the most anticipated launch of the century! Ok I think I am getting carried away, but you see what I am getting at right? You don’t buy a Mustang if you have a mild interest in cars. You buy it for what it is; an icon, a legend…a Ford Mustang!
With six models up for grabs in South Africa, including the Convertible, there may just be a Mustang for everyone. Or not! Starting at R699 900 for the 2,3 EcoBoost you will still need a small penny and if we are really honest, the Ford Mustang is not supposed to be for everybody!
The only teeny tiny thing that may leave you slightly underwhelmed is the engine sound. It certainly kick starts your petrol juices and those butterflies you feel still flutter, but they aren’t exactly going to cause a gale force wind. It was still wonderful, but like I say, only slightly underwhelming.
I haven’t driven a Ford Mustang before, otherwise that bucket list item would have already been ticked, so I cannot compare it to anything else. The Mustang is really a car within its own segment, it doesn’t have direct competitors; Mustang fans wouldn’t dare sway.
My experience of the Mustang will certainly not be the same for everybody. Some people love attention, which is something I don’t usually have a problem with so it is strange that I felt so uncomfortable in the situation I found myself in. Or perhaps it wasn’t the other people I was intimidated by but rather the presence of a Ford Mustang.
Look out for a video of the Mustang coming soon
