Ford Focus ST driving review
The Volkswagen Golf GTI is a firm favourite among South Africans, this we know. You see them all over our roads. And it’s no lie that it is in fact a firm favourite of mine. It is hard to fault the Golf. But now, its biggest competitor, the Ford Focus ST, has sneakily crept in to my heart, and I am torn!
Not only does the Focus ST look good, but it is the company’s most powerful ST to date. It is powered by a 2,0 L four-cylinder EcoBoost engine that produces 184 kW and 360 N.m of torque! The GTI serves up 162 kW and 350 N.m. A six-speed manual is standard on the ST…but if you are a true driving enthusiast, you will surely appreciate this?
The steering is responsive and you can’t help but want to whip this little beast around corners at high speeds (not that I did of course, I was very…or somewhat…responsible). But there really isn’t too much to worry about thanks to the enhanced Torque Vectoring Control which allows you to accelerate through corners with maximum grip as it constantly re-balances power and braking between the two front wheels.
Just as the GTI is, the ST is comfortable and the ride doesn’t require a sports bra. Ford ensure that the ST not only be about performance, but comfort as well. The standard Recaro sports seats are really, really comfy! Your back is supported but your shoulders aren’t restricted which can happen with so many sports seats. It means easier maneuvering of the steering wheel.
This may not be a car that I dream about, but with that said, I don’t have those feelings about the GTI either. They are just really enjoyable to drive! I would own both if I had the money of course, but then again, if I had the money to buy two hot hatches just for the fun of it I would have a few other beauties in my garage as well. Overall, the ST is a car that I LOVED driving and was sad to have to give it back.
The Focus ST pricing starts at R353 900 and comes with a host of standard features.
I suggest you go and test drive the ST, you will not be disappointed!
