The first-ever BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe brings a four-door coupe concept to life. It creates a fresh, individuality to this segment backed up by innovative operation and connectivity tech for everyday usability, and dynamic capability.
The world premiere takes place at the Los Angelus Auto Show in November 2019 and the launch will be held in March 2020. Why does the world need another Beemer sedan? Consider that the new 3 Series is the size of a four generation old 5 Series, there is a gap in the model lineup for a smaller sedan.
Standout features include; the four pillarless side windows and the rear lights extending into the center of the rear end, merging into a gloss black trim that runs up to and encircles the central BMW badge.
Even with its low, sporty appearance, passengers are catered for well where space is concerned. The dynamic front-end has slightly angled LED headlights with a large, reimagined kidney-grille.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe stands out in its class provided by the advanced BMW front-wheel drive (FWD) base the Gran Coupe shares with the new 1 Series along with a variety of other technical developments.
The tech system from the BMW i3 allows the slip diff to be more controlled than before. The system increases handling agility by applying the brakes at the wheels on the inside of the bend before the slip threshold has been reached and provides a neutral feel to the steering wheel.
The range-topper BMW M235i xDrive includes xDrive all-wheel drive (AWD), M Sport steering and M Sport brakes. The eight-speed automatic Sport transmission features a launch control mode. Customers can choose from five equipment lines: Basic, Advantage, Sport Line, Luxury Line, and M Sport.
One diesel and two petrol engines are on the cards: a three-cylinder petrol with 103 kW in the BMW 218i, a four-cylinder diesel unit with 104 kW in the BMW 220d, and BMW Group’s most powerful four-cylinder engine powering the BMW M235i with 225 kW (yes please!). The BMW 228i xDrive has a 2-litre four-cylinder engine producing 170 kW. We wait to hear what South Africa will get.
If the BMW Digital Key is optioned, a lock and unlock feature is available from a paired smartphone. The engine can be started as soon as the smartphone is placed in its tray.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has drive assistance systems, lane departure warning system, active cruise control, rear collision warning, and crossing traffic warning are all available as options.
Connected Navigation services allow internal and external information to be factored into route planning, and enables destinations to be sent from various apps straight to the navigation of the car where it will be stored and synced.
When it launches in South Africa, we’ll know more about the availability of connected features and apps for our market.
