5 Reasons to watch The Fate of the Furious
The official trailer for The Fate of the Furious has been released and it has somehow left a bad taste in our mouths.
WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!
Fast and the Furious 7 ended with an emotional scene showing Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and Dominic ‘Dom’ Toretto (Vin Diesel) go their separate ways. The eighth instalment (one of a trilogy) picks up where Brian has officially left the game. This will be the first film (except Tokyo Drift) not to feature Walker’s character – after the actor died in a car accident in 2013. It was surprising to hear the franchise would continue after the loss of a lead character. Audiences were sceptical about where the plot would go and by the looks of the trailer – we’re all in for a lot of drama. The franchise has grossed over 4 billion dollars and will include two more films after Fast 8.
Here are five reasons you need to watch The Fate of the Furious:
Cars
The latest film might have taken the ‘fast’ out of the name and replaced it with ‘fate’ but that does not mean the cars in the film are slow. Dom, the King of muscle cars is pictured driving the Plymouth Roadrunner GTX, his wife Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) drives the Chevy Corvette, Tej (Ludacris) is seen in the Mercedes-AMG GT, and both the Jaguar F-Type and Subaru BRZ make an appearance. Roman (Tyrese) drives both the Bentley Continental and the Lamborghini Murcielago.
‘Family No More’
Did you ever think you’d hear the words “Dominic Toretto just turned on us”? Me neither. If you’ve watched the trailer, you would have seen that Dom betrays his family and it’s not clear why. ‘Family’ has always been a central theme in the franchise (even if all the characters are not blood-related, they’re considered a family). The group has always been close and when the biggest family man betrays his family – we know there must be more to the story.
New Location
The film is shot in New York. We’ve seen the ‘family’ move to many cities from Los Angeles, Miami, Tokyo, Rio, Dominican Republic, London, Abu Dhabi – and the next stop is the Big Apple.
New Cast Members
South African actress Charlize Theron has been added to the cast and plays the villain Cipher, said to be a ‘high-tech terrorist’. She is the person responsible for turning Dom against his family. Other new faces (to the already all-star cast) include Scott Eastwood and English actress Helen Mirren.

Enemies become allies
Previously Big Brother Shaw (Jason Statham) and DSS agent Hobbs (Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson) were each other’s worst enemy, as seen in Furious 7 – and have now been ordered to work together by the leader of the covert ops team Petty (Kurt Russell). We’re not sure whether they are asked to save or destroy Dom after Hobbs says this, “I don’t know if the old Dom is in there, I don’t give a damn, I’m taking you down Toretto.”
