Red Bull Box Cart Race Returns To SA This September
Johannesburg – Red Bull Box Cart Race is set to return to South African streets for the first time in eight years. Bodacious gravity-powered, engineless box carts will hurdle down Sandton Drive, Joburg on Sunday, 16 September 2018 and entries are now open.
Red Bull Box Cart Race has graced streets all around the globe with over 100 races run since the first in Belgium in 2000. This year Joburg is one of five locations – Rome, Sofia, Cincinnati and Lisbon all feature on the 2018 calendar. The South African track is by far the steepest and most exciting of the year.
It’s a race for hand-made machines fueled by nothing but sheer courage and perhaps a little Red Bull. To enter, experienced racers and amateurs are challenged to design and build box cart dream machines that will run against the clock and be able to sustain the onslaught from a few on-course obstacles.
Come race day, teams are judged on speed, creativity and showmanship. No engines, batteries, electricity or catapults are allowed. What is allowed is unbridled imagination, charisma and, of course, some pretty bold and daring showmanship. It’s not enough that it actually moves or crosses the finish line first. The judges are looking for the outrageous, the preposterous, the ostentatious! Anything but the ordinary.
