The Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe
The Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe arrived at our office last week, and as we’ve been getting up close and personal with this performance-inspired piece of machinery, we’ve got some things to tell you…
Great to look at
I mean, look at it! It really is a great looking car and with a bold and dominating presence on the road and it sure grabs a lot of attention. The Mercedes-AMG C 63 S model has all the ingredients to satisfy those looking for a performance-focused, seriously sporty and smart looking vehicle. A long bonnet, short overhangs and ‘sensual curves’ add to the C 63 S’s eye-catching exterior and the sloping roofline of this coupe model adds to its ultra-smooth personality.
Great to be in
Its sporty spirit carries throughout the cabin. While the S model doesn’t make it easy to forget that you’re in a highly specced performance car, luxury, comfort and convenience are not neglected either. The list of high quality finishes is endless: endless brushed aluminium, smooth and glossy finishes with soft touch materials surrounding the dash, surrounding a large infotainment system which houses a wide range of driver-focused and passenger ergonomic settings.
It’s not family-focused, but it can be!
One needs to remember that this car means serious business. It’s designed specifically for those looking for a driver-focused vehicle and something that offers high performance potential. That said, the C 63 S doesn’t completely exclude the family members of such drivers. I had no trouble installing two children’s car seats at the back for a few trips around Cape Town, and although it’s a bit of a different story with three people on the back seat, a family of four can quite easily get out for a Sunday drive in comfort.
Driving fun
This is what the C 63 S is all about. It’s 4-litre V8 twin-turbo engine offers 375 kW of power and a whopping 700 N.m of torque and can race from 0 – 100 km in just 3.9 seconds! Five AMG Dynamic Select driving modes are available at your command via an easily accessed scrolling function on the centre console. Paddle shifts give you further control behind the wheel as well as adaptive cruise control with steering assist. Not that anyone should use the city streets as a race track, but last year we had an incredible opportunity to experience the C 63 S at the Zwartkops raceway, and when you’ve felt a car like this perform at its best, half of the reason for wishing I owned one is knowing exactly what it’s capable of! Pop it into Sport+ or Race mode and you’ll really need to know what you’re doing to not be completely intimidated by its overwhelming force and power. The sound that resonates from its intricately designed V8 engine immediately makes those around you stop what they’re doing to have a listen. It’s called the ‘AMG growl’ for a reason and it’s hard to resist popping it into sport+ mode for a few minutes of acoustic satisfaction.

Polite in the city
Included in its selection of driving modes is the C 63’s quieter and more comfortable ‘Comfort Mode’. Driving in Comfort Mode gives you a much more toned-down and easy-to-control sense of driving pleasure, better suited for your every day driving. It behaves beautifully in and around the city, but don’t let that fool you! The C 63 S can turn into a mighty beast when you need it to.
The Mercedes-AMG C 63 S has been one of our most exhilarating test cars yet, and if you’ve got R1 509 100 to spend, you’ll get your money’s worth with this high-powered, performance-driving king of the road.
