The new Mahindra Pik-Up Double Cab 2017 – improved and refined
In October this year, Mahindra launched its updated version of the next generation Mahindra Pik-Up. Offering 103 kW of power, a six-speed gearbox and new styling enhancements, the new Mahindra Pik-Up has entered the market with a much more refined offering.
Although I attended the launch, I always discover so much more about a car when I get to spend some more time with it during my daily commuting. After I’d spent a week with Mahindra’s new Pik-Up, there was a lot more to note…
Bird’s eye-view
The first thing I noticed when stepping into the new Pik-Up was that you sit pretty high up. It gives you a great view of everything around you, (like naughty drivers texting and driving in traffic), but its raised height also gives you a better perspective of what’s ahead of you. One problem with this is that its radio antenna gets nipped by some underground parking roofs, but I imagine that most Pik-Up owners wouldn’t be parking in busy parking garages often.
Comfort
Its cabin is spacious and while its exterior looks tough and rugged, inside is quite the opposite. It’s extremely comfortable once you’re settled in the driver’s seat. Soft seats and various comfort features, like it’s fold-down arm rest, make this particular cabin a relaxing place to be.
Punchy and powerful
You’d think that with its big and bold appearance the Pik-Up would be better suited to the open road where one would usually make the most of picking up the pace and power. But I really was surprised at just how punchy this bakkie is, even in and around Cape Town’s busy CBD. It’s got a real kick to it, and seems to show off even in second gear. In fact, it’s easy to forget just how big it is when its punchiness tempts you to quickly zip in and around traffic.
Safety
Mahindra is strengthening their commitment to safety, to make its new Pik-Up more family-friendly, and to give drivers piece of mind. So there is a range of safety features to keep your mind at ease…
These include ABS, EBD, Dual airbags, Crash protection crumple zones and a Collapsible steering column.
They’ve also added three head rests for backseat passengers, three-point seatbelts, as well as two ISOFIX anchor-points at the back of the Double Cab S10 models.
Conclusion
The new Mahindra Pik-Up might not be as refined as bakkies like the Ford Ranger or the Volkswagen Amarok, for example, but it’s certainly a great alternative to the bigger players and for customers looking for a more affordable bakkie capable of heavy loads and off-roading adventures.
