We Drive: The Opel Corsa 120Y Special Edition

Extra style, more standard safety and more fuel savings for Opel’s 120Y Special Edition Corsa…

For many South Africans, the Opel Corsa has held a familiar presence in our lives with popularity among students and first-time-drivers alike, for example. In fact the Opel Corsa was my first car and I have fond memories of zipping around varsity and even driving it from Cape Town to Plettenberg Bay in it, without fail.

Fast forward to the first quarter of 2019 when Opel celebrated 120 years in the vehicle industry. To mark its milestone, the automaker released a Special Edition Corsa (based on the Corsa Enjoy) to the local market. We’ve just spent some time with it to see what it has to offer customers looking for a bit extra from the Corsa line-up…

Extra style

The Special Edition Opel Corsa adds a level of trendiness to the regular Enjoy model, with an added sense of style and refinement.

To add to the Corsa’s bubbly but sporty styling, this Special Edition model gets 16″ Gun Metal Silver Alloy Wheels, upgraded ‘Allure’ Cloth Trim, unique ‘Opel’ Door Sill Plates, stylish Beltline – Chrome Moulding and Velour floor mats with embroidered ‘120Y’ logo.

Extra safety

With South Africa’s roads being a rather treacherous place to be these days, we all want peace of mind when it comes to our cars. The Special Edition Opel Corsa comes with all the safety features you’d expect from its regular Enjoy model, from ABS and ESP to Isofix Child Seat Anchorage, but as standard the 120Y adds a rear-view camera as well as front and rear Park Assist, to name a few.

Extra connectivity

As standard in the 120Y model Opel offers its customers an easy-to-use 7-inch Touchscreen infotainment system that comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If you still want to connect your phone the old school way, via Bluetooth, I’m pleased to report that it barely took me a minute to pair my phone in order to access my contacts and music playlists. No fuss. No frustrations. The 120Y also gets 6 premium speakers that offer great in-car acoustics to ‘enjoy’ while listening to your favourite tunes.

Extra fuel savings

In terms of fuel economy (because no one wants to be spending more than we need to at the pump these days) you can complement your fuel-efficient driving skills by making use of the 120Y’s ECO mode button. This reduces engine and transmission performance, and will switch off your engine when you’re at a complete stop, to give a better fuel consumption. Opel says that driving in this mode can result in a fuel consumption as low as 4.1-litres/100 km. Unless you switch it off via the button on the left of the dash, the ECO mode is permanently switched on for constant savings.

Below are Opel’s claimed fuel consumption numbers, however I must confess that I averaged around 5.8-litres while zipping around the city in normal mode – and with the aircon on.

Urban (l/100 km) – 5.6
Extra-Urban (l/100 km) – 4.1
Combined Cycle (l/100 km) – 4.6

Pricing and conclusion

What I loved (and now miss) most about my time spent driving the Corsa 120Y is how it has maintained its light and easy driving manner. It stays true to its ‘light side of life’ slogan that I remember from my old Corsa, with easy, uncomplicated driving and steering that makes parking in the city a peace of cake! The benefit of having a car that saves you at the pump, together with extra, sportier styling and added safety features as standard makes the Opel Corsa 120Y an exciting product to consider.
