Will London’s Uber Ban Affect SA?
Last Friday saw the announcement of Transport for London(TfL) placing a ban on transport giant, Uber. This will affect 40 000 drivers and 3.5 million Londoners.
With many people up in arms, Uber is hoping to have their licence renewed. But what impact is this going to have on Uber SA?
We find out…
Why Is Uber No Longer?
According to TfL, Uber is not a “fit and proper” private car hire operator. “TfL considers that Uber’s approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility in relation to a number of issues which have potential public safety and security implications.”
Some of the concerns stem from the way that Uber has dealt with criminal offenses in the past. Many of the crimes taking place in Ubers was because Uber didn’t perform thorough background checks on their drivers.
Uber’s last day in London will be September 30. The company will however, have 21 days to appeal and will be allowed to run until then.
What Does Uber Plan To Do?
Despite TfL’s allegations, General Manager of Uber in London, Tom Elvidge, has agreed to make changes to the company in order to renew their licence.
“To defend the livelihoods of all those drivers, and the consumer choice of millions of Londoners who use our app, we intend to immediately challenge this in the courts,” explains Elvidge.
Uber in London will most likely make changes to their passenger safety, benefits for their drivers and limits on their working hours.
Will This Affect Uber SA?
South Africans can breathe a sigh of relief as Uber SA will not be affected by London’s ban. This is according to Uber SA who say that “This is only in London and does not impact SA. Business continues as normal.”
Uber SA’s spokesperson, Samantha Allenberg says that Uber SA sticks to all the rules and regulations set out by the National Land Transport Act(NLTA).
“Uber is pro smart regulation. Since launching in SA we have been engaging with policy makers on this topic. Driver-partners using the Uber app have completed the requisite steps in applying for their Operating Licenses, under the current National Land Transport Act (NLTA).”
Uber SA do not inflict working hours on their drivers. Uber is a service that provides people with an opportunity to make extra money whenever.
