Would you buy a car that had been driven on Top Gear?

Buying a pre-owned car has its risks and when you head in to a dealership and ask about a demo model you hope they are telling you the truth about its brief history.

This poor man from Kent must have been over the moon when he bought the current generation BMW M3. Rob Willis paid £50 000 for a bright blue M3 demo model. He was told that this ex-demo had been driven by one of the managers of the dealership so of course, trusted that it would be a great buy. But this was not to be the case.

“…The brakes were constantly squeaking and the steering wheel made a clunking noise every time I came off the motorway.” said Willis. This didn’t make sense to Willis seeing as it was a relatively new car. Then it all became pretty clear…

“…we were watching Top Gear about four weeks later and my fiancée noticed that the M3 Jeremy Clarkson was driving had the same number plate as my car.

“You could see smoke coming out from the wheels, he was taking the curves that fast.”

In the UK, a number plate stays with a car for it’s entire ‘life cycle’ so there was no doubt that the car Willis saw being absolutely beaten on Top Gear was in fact his car.

As Jalopnik put it, most of us probably would have screen grabbed the hell out of that episode and Tweeted about it, but Willis was far more sensible and decided that he deserved a car that hadn’t been hooned around a track by Jeremy Clarkson. The dealership replaced his car with a BMW 330d, hopefully with a bunch of extras thrown in for good measure!

Would you love to own a car that Jeremy Clarkson had driven on Top Gear? Not sure I would!
