All-new Triton coming soon to SA!
Mitsubishi Motors South Africa has confirmed that its next-generation Triton pick-up range is expected to reach our shores sometime around June next year!
“We are delighted to confirm the introduction of the all-new Triton in the local market. In countries where it’s already been launched, automotive journalists who have driven the new Triton were extremely complimentary about the quiet car-like drive it offers. The softer and quieter SUV type ride, complemented by the functionality of a traditional load bin, prompted Mitsubishi’s engineers to label it a Sport Utility Truck (SUT),”
says Wynand Pretorius, Chief Operations Officer of Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MSSA).
The Triton is the fifth generation Mitsubishi pick-up or bakkie and is by far its most advanced commercial vehicle to date. The new model has already started raking in the accolades in countries where it has been introduced, including that of 2015 Truck of the Year by Auto Express in the UK!
“The new Triton offers a surprisingly quiet ride and cabin comfort reminiscent of a passenger car, while in the new Triton functionality and reliability required for tough working conditions are as present as ever,”
says Pretorius.
The Tritons sleek new design results in a dynamic and elegant look, but also contributes to improved aerodynamic performance – resulting in better fuel efficiency.
The Triton features advanced technology and a powerful engine, resulting in outstanding performance. The new generation 2.4 litre turbo diesel engine is the jewel in the new Triton’s crown!
Combined with 6-speed manual and 5-speed automatic gearboxes, the driving experience is similar to that of passenger cars.
This new engine produces 133 kW of power and a whopping 430Nm of torque, while the transmissions and various other noise insulators have been put in place to reduce the engine sound.
The top-of-the-range 4×4 double cab derivatives will offer Mitsubishi’s unique state-of-the-art Super Select II 4-wheel drive system, which is also used in the Pajero and Pajero Sport ranges. This system offers four types of driving modes including full-time 4WD and 2WD which improves cornering performance. Full-time 4WD provides better stability on wet and slippery roads and offers excellent safety when faced with sudden changes in road conditions.
This 4-wheel drive system is considered to be one of the most advanced off-road control systems in the world and played a major role in Mitsubishi’s unmatched performance during the gruelling Dakar Rallies!
The new Triton was awarded a 5-star ANCAP safety rating, achieved by the liberal use of high-tensile steel and the introduction of various active safety technologies.
Mitsubishi has also added the necessary high-end safety equipment to the Triton double cabs, including 7 airbags and ISOFIX mounting points for baby seats. All models are fitted with a collapsible steering wheel column, designed to retract in the event of an impact.
In top specification, the new Triton offers:
- Cruise control.
- Keyless operating system.
- Dual Zone Auto Air-conditioning.
- Reverse camera mated to a touch-screen full-colour navigation system.
- Electrically adjustable driver’s seat, tilt and telescopic steering wheel adjustment.
- Leather upholstery.
“The new Triton was designed to match the ride quality of an SUV without compromising the workhorse qualities that have made double cab bakkies so popular. We believe our engineers have hit their target and that the new Triton Sport Utility Truck will prove as popular in South Africa as in other countries,”
concludes Pretorius.
