BMW i8 cabriolet to be announced soon?
It has been reported that a BMW i8 cabriolet, ‘Spyder,’ will be revealed at the CES 2015. Taking place in Las Vegas from 6-9 Jan 2016, the model will be directly inspired by the first BMW i8 ‘Spyder’ concept.
So 2016 could see the third model added to their range of electric vehicles, currently consisting of the small electric i3 city car and the i8 hybrid sports model.
The BMW i3 is a fully electric coupe with autonomy ranging from 130km to almost 200km. With zero CO2 emissions thanks to its 170HP electric motor, powered by a lithium-ion battery.
The BMW i3 can also be equipped with a range extender. This consists of a 34HP two cylinder petrol engine. It’s placed next to the electric engine, above the back axle. This extends the range of the vehicle to around 300km.
The BMW i8 delivers the same performance and looks as any premium sports car. However, it has an electric engine and a petrol engine, totalling 362HP! With a top speed of 250km/h and acceleration from 0-100km/h in only 4.4s!
These rumours of the BMW i8 cabriolet are by no means new and it is believed that a ‘BMW i8s’ or ‘BMW i8 Spyder’ will be one of the major announcements made by BMW early next year.
Compared to the BMW i8, this two-seater could have an even sportier design, with a new suspension and wider tires. It could have a maximum of 500HP according to various reports by independent experts.
