BMW X5 xDrive40e: BMW’s first plug-in hybrid car
BMW’s first ever plug-in hybrid is now available in South Africa and it’s a Sports Activity Vehicle!
Volvo’s XC90 was the chosen model for Volvo’s first SUV plug-in derivative, while Mercedes-Benz’s S-Class was theirs, and now the X5 is BMW’s choice for their flagship plug-in hybrid.
BMW is getting pretty serious about this electric plug-in hybrid. Using eDrive technology BMW fans can now enjoy driving a plug-in hybrid from the BMW core brand for the first time.
With various different drive modes, (including comfort, sport and eco pro) which can be selected with the Driving Control switch, the X5 xDrive40e offers an adaptable driving experience.
Total system output: 230 kW generated by a four-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and a synchronous electric motor (83 kW).
Engine: 2,0-litre, inline four, turbocharged petrol
Torque: 350 N.m at 1250 – 4800 r/min / 450 N.m combined
Fuel consumption: 3.4 – 3.3 litres per 100 kilometres
Electricity consumption: 15.4 – 15.3 kWh per 100 kilometres
Co2 emissions: around 78 – 77 grams per km
Luggage space: 500 – 1, 720 litres
The hybrid powertrain control ensures that the engine and the electric motor act in unison to optimise efficiency and driver’s requirements.
“Practically all the optional extras offered for the BMW X5 can also be specified for the plug-in hybrid model. The Design Pure Experience and Pure Excellence packages for the exterior and interior are also available for the BMW X5 xDrive40e, as are the M Sport package and the bespoke features from BMW Individual.”
