Cape Town ranked most traffic congested city in SA, again
If you live in Cape Town and drive to and from work in the CBD this will come as no surprise. This is the second time in a row this year that the Mother City has ranked 1st as the most traffic congested city in South Africa, according to Dutch navigation equipment maker, TomTom’s traffic index.
The report was released on Wednesday after a survey, which included 174 cities, found that Cape Town ranked 47th for being delayed in traffic. It found that Capetonians spend an extra 40 minutes in traffic, 5 minutes more than Johannesburg drivers.

According to Cape Town Transport Mayoral Councillor, Brett Herron, it could take years before other reliable modes of travelling are improved.
“The only sustainable solution is to have significantly fewer private vehicles on our roads. However, as much as we want private vehicle owners to make use of public transport, we have to take into account that it will take some years to establish other reliable and attractive travel alternatives across the city to give people in private cars realistic choices – of which passenger rail is the most obvious. We have to add capacity to the existing road network to provide some form of relief in the severely congested areas of the city while we are working on establishing an efficient, affordable, extensive and intermodal public transport system.”
