Chaos on the N2 causing heavy delays
Today Eyewitness News reported that Golden Arrow buses were set alight during protests in Nyanga. Golden Arrow says at least 11 of its buses have been set alight as protests in the area continues. This of course caused heavy delays and standstill as the chaos continues in Nyanga and on Cape Town’s N2.
The N2 inbound to Cape Town has been closed down due to these violent protests causing heavy delays in traffic. Motorists has been advised to take alternative routes.
The protest is understood to be an illegal protest by taxi drivers. The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) says its drivers have several grievances that are falling on deaf ears even after complaining to the City of Cape Town. According to reports, taxi drivers are targeting MyCity buses as well in protest of them using the same route.
Santaco’s Sipho Masethi said, “First of all, fines have increased, This includes the warrant system which is being used. This is totally unacceptable.”
ENCA reports that a strong petrol and burnt metal smell fills the air at the Nyanga bus terminus. Golden Arrow’s Bronwyn Dyk says at least two of their drivers have been attacked. “As far as I know two our drivers were removed from the scene and were beaten.”
All bus services from Nyanga have been cancelled for the time being. City of Cape Town mayoral member of safety and security JP Smith said, “In the meantime we are also trying to organise an urgent meeting with the affected parties to resolve the matter as soon as possible”.
