Department of Transport clarifies license renewal extension

The Department of Transport has clarified the terms on which driving licence renewals are based. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a backlog has built up at offices across the country, and as a result, the Department extended licence expiration dates in a bid to ease the backlog.

It has now stipulated, however, that this applies only to licence renewal cards and not vehicle license disks.

“The Department of Transport clarifies to the public that the Government Gazette of the 30th of November 2020 announcing the extension of licences did not include vehicle licences/licence discs,” the department said last week.

All learner’s licences, driving licences, temporary driving licence cards and professional driving permits that expired between March 26, 2020 and December 31, 2020 fall within the grace period that extends to August 31, 2021.

Residents are urged to use the extension to their advantage and either update or obtain their driving licence for the first time. The extension was created to provide temporary relief from the backlog caused by the hard lockdown period.
