Police crack down on fake licenses and drunk driving!
During the festive season the police have made a serious effort to clean up the roads. A particular emphasis has been on drivers using fake licenses and drunk driving.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has stated that over 160 individuals have been caught and arrested using fake licenses over the festive season. Gauteng came in with the highest number, amounting to 88. Second was KwaZulu-Natal with 23, followed closely by the Western Cape with 17.

The spokesman of the RTMC, Simon Zwane, stated:
“These people will be charged with fraud and corruption for possessing fraudulent documents, such as fake licenses.”
We will also be investigating where they are getting these fake licences, whether they are getting them from driving schools. We already know there are third parties printing these documents.
These fake licenses are different. Every document issued by the state, like money, has security features these do not have.”

Apart from drivers using fake licenses, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport reported that as many as 3604 drivers have been caught driving without any license whatsoever.
Zinhle Mngomezulu of the Road Traffic Inspectorate reported that only individuals who were driving heavy vehicles without a license would face arrest, the others would just be fined.
Smash and grab incidents at an all time high in Cape Town!
The provincial department is hopeful that it has begun to reduce the high levels of road accidents that occur around this time of the year. This is based on statistics that show a general downward trend in reports of crashes and fatalities.
Road crashes and deaths decreased to 194 this year (so far), compared to 227 last year. Latest figures reveal that there were 222 fatalities as a result of these crashes, compared to the 2014 figure of 260 deaths.
