Gauteng motorist caught with blood alcohol level 12 times over the limit

A 39-year-old man in Gauteng was arrested on Tuesday, December 22 for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. A test revealed he was 12 times over the legal limit for blood-alcohol levels.

According to the Gauteng Traffic Police , the truck driver was arrested at about 1pm next to the Pomona off ramp after he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into several other vehicles. Upon being tested for alcohol consumption, results found he was 12 times over the limit as it showed 1.25 milligram per 100 millilitres.

The driver has since been charged and detained at the Kempton Park police station, and appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate Court on Wednesday [December 23].

“We condemn this kind of irresponsible and reckless behaviour by road users especially during the festive season where motorists are expected to save lives. The law enforcement authorities will not rest until ruthless and lawless behaviour is eradicated on our roads,” said Gauteng Traffic Police Spokesperson Sello Maremane said.

“Drinking and driving is one of the major contributors of fatal crashes resulting in the loss of lives.”

Maremane warned that any motorists discovered driving under the influence of alcohol will be charged, arrested and will face a conviction of up to seven years’ imprisonment.
