Here we go! KZN set to get e-tolls
Sanral (the South African National Roads Agency Limited) have confirmed that KwaZulu-Natal is set to have electronic tolling on the N2 and the N3 by November this year. This might come as bad news, but road users should note that it would not be an additional toll but simply an alternative means of collecting existing tolls. The e-tolling system will be implemented at the existing Mariannhill Toll Plaza on the N3 and the Oribi Toll Plaza near Port Shepstone on the N2.
The current method of paying will be maintained but additional lanes would be added. Vehicles without e-tags would still have to drive through the traditional booths and pay with the cashiers. This concept is implemented largely to reduce traffic. More than 100 000 vehicles use the N3 daily. The manual toll booths can process between 200 and 300 vehicles an hour where as up to 700 vehicles can pass through e-tolls per hour.
