How much does speeding cost you?
Do you often find yourself owing large sums of money as a result of your driving habits?
Here’s some info regarding how much speeding can cost you!
You’ generally won’t be fined if you exceed the speeding limit by less than 10 km/h. So if you’re in a 60 zone, you probably won’t be fined if you’re travelling at less than 70 km/h.
If you’re caught driving faster than that you will face the above fines!
Speeding fines for all speed limits follow the above convention. You’re allowed less than 10 km/h over the limit, but after that you’ll pay R200 for every 5 km/h over the limit.
However, if you exceed the limit by over 45 km/h – you may find yourself being arrested. After which you will have to appear before a magistrate and may face jail time or a fine for as much as R25000!
The speed limits are there for a reason! Travelling within the speed limit will generally be more fuel efficient, as well as the obvious safety concerns.
Rather leave early to get where you need to be, instead of speeding to get there!
Although if you do find yourself on the receiving end of one of these, you can more than likely get it reduced or even thrown out altogether! All you need to do is write a letter to your city or town’s traffic department providing some kind of reasoning as to why your speeding fine was unfairly issued! Perhaps the speed limit wasn’t clearly visible and you were travelling from a 100 zone to a 80 zone, or any justification really!
From my experience they are quite lenient! The mere fact that you’ve taken the effort to write in to them is often enough to grant you some kind of reduction, (a good reason is obviously better!)
