N2 rock throwing, attacked in broad daylight!
Tristan Bruce was the victim of an N2 rock throwing attack yesterday, while travelling home to Rondebosch from Somerset-West.
Emergency numbers to have while driving on the N2
He was travelling along the infamous ‘hell-run’ stretch of the N2 at around 12:30 when he noticed a man standing quite close to the edge of the road.
“The man was standing next to the road with something in his hand.”
At this point there’s not much you can do, even being aware of it. The only advice I would say would be to try and remain calm, expect that it may happen and anticipate what you’ll do if it does.
“As I was getting closer he came out and threw a rock at my windscreen,” he said.

While shaken a bit, Tristan managed to do just that – wary of the threat of a potential hijacking (especially in light of recent events.) He continued to drive for about 5km’s with his windscreen completely smashed and an injury to his arm.
When he felt he was safe he pulled over to assess the damage to his both his vehicle and himself.
He then called the police, before being taken to a nearby hospital for a check-up.
Unfortunately no arrest has been made and Tristan stated,
“The man ran towards Site C in Khayelitsha and I did not see him again.”
How far can you drive on a flat tyre?
Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said:
“Police can confirm the incident on the N2 direction towards Cape Town opposite Site C, Khayelitsha of stone throwing at about 12.35pm. No arrest has yet been made.”
“Police were deployed in the vicinity to monitor the situation,”
Van Wyk added.
The scary thing is that these N2 rock throwing incidents can happen at any time of the day! So it isn’t just at night that one should be wary!
Tips on how to avoid a hijacking and what to do if you are
Also another thing to take note of – inspect your wind-screen regularly for any chips or cracks. While it may not prevent all incidents, your wind-screen is far more likely to break or shatter from any projectiles if it has existing weak points!
