Nissan recalls Pathfinder SUVs for brake light issue

Documents filed with the USA’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveals that Nissan plans to recall 267 276 Pathfinder SUVs from March 1 for a brake light issue only affecting 2013, 2014 and 2015 models of the Pathfinder.

This is not the first time this has occurred. The 2013 and 2014 models were recalled for this exact issue back in 2016, reports Car and Driver.

According to the documents, there is a problem with the brake light switch relay which can cause the lights to become stuck in the ‘on’ position even when the car is not being used. This is likely to happen under “frequent stop-and-go driving with repeated brake pedal input”. This may cause chattering in the light’s relay and result in its becoming stuck.

While largely a safety issue, Nissan has detailed a number of other more serious consequences which include the potential for “limited engine power (brake override), the ability to shift the vehicle out of park without depressing the brake pedal, and/or the engine starting without depressing the brake pedal,” according to the car manufacturer.

Nissan will contact car owners on whether their car has been recalled, but owners can also visit the NHTSA’s website to determine whether there are any open recalls on their vehicle.

Once recalled, dealers will either reinstall the relay in a better position or replace it entirely.
