The number of women who drink and drive has almost doubled
A recent study revealed that the number of females who drink and drive has almost doubled since the start of the 21st century. This information became apparent after research was done on the topic.
”The percentage of women convicted for drink-driving has almost doubled since 1998, according to new research which calls for the legal alcohol limit to be lowered,” Auto Express reported.
The numbers reveal that now about 17% of people who get caught for drink-driving are women – this came up from 9% in 1998. Even more worrying, was the fact one in six women motorists said they thought they’d driven over the limit in the past year. It was also found that women were actually more likely to be over the limit than men from the age of 30.
Females metabolise alcohol in a totally different way and hit the limit much quicker as the alcohol is far less diluted in the bloodstream. Half of the women surveyed as part of research said they didn’t even know the limit and many felt they could drink more than the “average woman”.
A lot of people feel that drinking and driving is not such a big deal, but you may change your mind after reading these statistics about South African road safety:
– Six out of ten drivers that die in accidents have dangerously high alcohol levels in their blood.
– 50% of truck drivers and 30% of taxi drivers had been drinking or smoking marijuana.
– 3000 adult pedestrians are killed in motor accidents per year. 70% of them are drunk when killed.
– When you are on the road at night, one out of every seven drivers sharing the road with you, is drunk.

– It is the third leading cause of death in the USA.
