Police officers suspended for hit-and-run
Two Eastern Cape police officers have been suspended for allegedly speeding away after a fatal hit-and-run accident.
The victim was knocked down by a marked police vehicle while walking on the side of the road. An autopsy was conducted and the victim suffered head injuries and died on the scene. The two police officers had booked out the car but did not report what had happened when their shift ended, they merely ignored the scenario.
Provincial commissioner Lt-Gen Celiwe Cynthia Binta said: “I want to condemn strongly the conduct of the officials involved in this incident. This is not the type of behaviour that we expect from police officials and we are extremely let down by their display of poor discipline, professionalism and lack of care.”
Binta said: “The police vehicle failed to stop after the collision and sped away. I have ensured that notices of immediate suspension be served on the two members.”
