Don’t fall for fake traffic fine SMS scam!
Have you received a strange SMS to do with an outstanding traffic fines you weren’t aware of?
Well the South African Police Service has warned us all to be aware of fake SMS’s saying that a case has been opened against us by the police due to outstanding fines.
In some cases victims have had money stolen from them after being instructed to deposit a certain amount of money into a specific FNB or ABSA account, even though they may not have had any outstanding fines at all.
“The scam came to the SAPS’s attention after a case had been reported in Rosebank, Gauteng in January. It was followed by other cases with the same modus operandi that was reported in the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State, North West, and Limpopo,” said The Hawk’s Hangwani Mulaudzi.
Alternatively one can contact Detective Lieutenant DK Hattingh of the National Investigation Unit (NINU) at 079 695 0293 or email: [email protected].
“We just want to warn the public that this is not how we operate as police.”
He also urged the public to inform their nearest police station if any such text message is received.
Cellphone scams are on the rise in South Africa. If you have any doubt or speculation over a text message don’t be afraid to question it and bring it to the attention of authorities.
