Porsche reinvent its entry-level roadster with the 718 Boxster!
Don’t let the new 718 Boxster’s downsized engines dishearten you, this entry-level roadster from Porsche shows how dynamite comes in small packages!
The naming of the 718 Boxster now has a model number, much like the rest of Porsche’s model line-up. Also including the 718 Boxster S variant.
The downsized engine isn’t really downsized in terms of performance, but rather just the actual size. The Boxster 718 comes packed with a two-litre ‘turbofour’ rated engine, with output of 220kW, (26 more than the previous six it replaces) and 380Nm of torque. This roadster shoots off the line reaching 100km/h in just 4.7 seconds and up to 275km/h at top speed. This makes it almost a second quicker than the previous model.
The 718 BoxsterS comes packed with a 2.5-litre turbo, with variable turbine geometry. With a power output of 257kW and 420Nm of torque. Allowing it to reach 100km/h in 4.2 seconds, with top speeds quoted at 285km/h.
Both models are also more fuel efficient, with an estimated 13% less fuel consumption compared to previous models. The 718 Boxster will use 6.9 litres per 100km and the 718 Boxster S will use 7.3 per 100km if estimates are accurate.
Both models come standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, with a dual-clutch transmission as an optional extra.
Porsche’s new roadster also see a re-tuned suspension, allowing for a more direct response in terms of steering. There is also an optional active suspension management feature, which provides a 10mm lower ride height and more varying settings range. The 718 Boxster S is also available, for the first time, with a 20mm drop in ride height.
The Boxster 718 and Boxster 718 S will be released locally on May 2016. Prices probably won’t be all that great, due to the recent performance of the rand.
