Does speed kill?
There was a discussion on Cape Talk this morning surrounding the ongoing debate on whether or not South Africa’s speed limit should be reduced in built-up areas.
“Does speed kill – Debate
You will have seen on the electronic billboards the slogan #speedkillsfacts – and recently there was an op-ed piece in the newspaper by Hector Elliot and Marion Sinclair of Stellenbosch University. One of the main points discussed was the role that speed plays in causing road accidents, as well as the severity of trauma due to speed. In some countries, they have lowered the speed limits in built-up areas, with telling results. Opponents to this say that it merely gives authorities greater opportunity to raise revenue via speed enforcement (speed traps). To discuss the matter, we had on the one side Hector Elliot, Chief Director, Road Safety Co-ordination, Department of Transport and Public Works, Western Cape Government, and Howard Dembovsky – National Chairman for Justice Project South Africa – who disagrees that speeding kills.”
Now, we want to hear from you!
