Tesla recalls more than 100 000 Model S and X vehicles

Tesla recalls Model S and X vehicles

Tesla has announced it will recall 135 000 Model X and S vehicles in the United States after a lengthy investigation concluded that their touch screens are defective.

According to Tesla, certain Model S sedans from 2012 to 2018 and Model X crossovers from 2016 to 2018 – which had Nvidia Corp processors and are prone to wearing out – are the ones being recalled. The processors wearing out may lead to the loss of the rear-view camera display.

The American National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) sent a letter to Tesla saying it had deemed the failures a “defect”. While Tesla has openly disagreed with the finding, it has voluntarily initiated a recall and will replace memory devices within the processors.

NHTSA opened a preliminary investigation into the issue in June 2020, and changed the probe to an engineering analysis in November.
