Texas nurse heads straight to work after surviving 100 car pile up

Being involved in a car crash is enough to ruin your entire day. Now picture multiplying that car crash by 100, because that is exactly what happened to Rebecca Benson, a nurse from Texas who was involved in a 100 car pile-up in Fort Worth, Texas on Thursday, February 11.

Not only did Benson survive the pile up, which took place at around 6:30 am, but she somehow managed to make it to work after the incident, according to reports from ABC’s World News Tonight.

At around 6:30 am Benson was on her regular commute to work. As Benson made her way onto the highway she turned a corner and saw a number of stopped cars in front of her. She quickly stepped her foot on the brake pedal, but that had little to no effect and was sent hurtling into the vehicles in front of her.

Amongst the vehicles she was heading towards was a Coca-Cola semi-trailer truck and a car hauler semi, which formed a V shape in the middle of the highway. Benson decided that the best course of action would be to aim for the middle of the two semi-trucks, hoping that would lessen the blow when she eventually hit.

“So, there was a Coca-Cola semi and a car hauler semi that had kind of made almost like a triangle. So, I pointed the car there and prayed to God that I would be okay and that’s when I hit them,” Benson said in an interview with ABC World News Tonight.

Seeing as Benson is a nurse, she knew it was of utmost importance to remain calm after she hit the two trucks, but that is easier said than done, especially when a new car would come crashing into the pile-up every few minutes.

Take a look at the aftermath of the pile-up below:

“I looked in my rearview mirror and can see all of these cars heading towards me. So I think that was the scariest part, knowing that I survived this part but now the chances of me getting completely smashed by all the cars and semis behind me,” Benson explained.

Thankfully, she was helped out of her vehicle by another motorist before she sustained any serious injuries.  After being involved in such a horrific accident you would expect Benson to take a much need sick day, but that is not the case. Once she was a safe distance from the pile-up Benson called one of her co-workers who happened to be nearby and got a ride to work right after the incident.

“So I talked to one of the police officers, I was like, ‘Can I leave my car here and go hitch a ride with my co-worker?’ So, I hopped the barrier, literally walked up the highway down to him,” Benson said.

After completing her shift, Benson’s husband insisted that she go for a checkup in case she had any underlying injuries. Surprisingly, the only injuries she suffered were neck and shoulder pains, and a bruise on her left shoulder which she described as “bruised to the high-heavens.”

Sadly, at least six people died during the pile-up and 36 others were transported to local hospitals. The massive 100 car pile-up is believed to be caused by ‘black ice’ on the highway.

Put simply, black ice is a transparent layer of ice that usually forms on roads. Seeing as the layer of ice is see-through, the road appears to be its normal black colour, hence the name black ice. Roadways become extremely slippery when black ice forms, which leads to dangerous driving conditions.
