Top Gear finds a new host?
Ever since Clarkson got booted off Top Gear, after his both verbal and physical assault of one of the producers – the show’s future has been up in the air.
BBC seem to think that Radio 2 DJ, Chris Evans might be the answer to this question. In the past, Evans has publicly expressed his love for the show and has appeared as a guest. He is also a collector of classic cars and was reported to have spent as much as £2.27 million (R44 million) on a 1971 Ferrari Daytona Spyder, last year.
On the Channel 4 show – Sunday Brunch on Sunday, after being asked if he had starting presenting for the show he replied with, “Not started yet, but we are doing a secret Top Gear film on Tuesday.”
This film will be produced by an independent production company and when presenter Tim Lovejoy stated that his involvement with the show wasn’t much of a surprise anymore, Evans replied by saying, “It still will be, because nobody knows where it’s going to be but we’re going to make one and see how it goes.”
Clarkson, Hammond and May all poked fun at Evans after hearing the news. With responses such as:
Clarkson writing, “Next week, I’m doing a pilot Radio 2 breakfast show with an independent production company. We’ll see how it goes.”
May tweeting, “I’m working on a new TV idea, with an independent production company, called TFI Thursday. We’ll see how it goes.”
And Hammond adding, “Next week I’m doing a pilot of the Two Show on Fridays with an independent production company. We’ll see how it goes.”
Whether or not the co-stars will return to Top Gear without Clarkson is still uncertain, they have both reportedly turned down offers of more than £1 million (R19.14 million) each.
There are also rumours of the trio securing a deal with Netflix, to present a rival motoring show.
The future success of the Top Gear brand is by no means certain and if it doesn’t recover, what will take its place? Only time will tell!
