Toyota GR Yaris crowned TopGear SA Performance Car for 2021
TopGear SA recently hosted its Speed Week ’21 challenge that involved 13 of South Africa’s most dynamic and diverse performance cars against each other in a multi-province road trip culminating at the Phakisa Raceway in the Freestate.
The selection included pure-bred supercars, super saloons, GT cars and hot hatches. The GR Yaris however, showed its worth by taking the overall Performance Car of the Year accolade.
“Winning the TopGear SA performance car of the year title just goes to reinforce the reputation that the GR Yaris has garnered in the global motoring space and we are very proud of its achievements. While we often use marketing phrases like “rally car for the road”, it’s a solid validation for Toyota and Gazoo Racing to have a group of experienced motoring journalists pick the GR Yaris as their best performance car, amongst pretty esteemed company and other sports brands.” says Glenn Crompton, Vice-President of Marketing at Toyota SA Motors.
The combination of the GR Yaris’ rally-bred DNA, user-adjustable GR-Four all-wheel drive (AWD) system and eager, free-revving 198kw 3-cylinder turbocharged engine – delivers a performance package reminiscent of the analogue sport sedans and hatches of the 90’s and 2000’s. Coupled with a slick (and weighted) 6-speed manual transmission and lightweight rally-optimised construction, the GR Yaris is a true driver’s car in the purest sense of the word.
