Preliminary information indicates that an external veldt fire was the probable cause of a blaze at Bridgestone’s off-the-road (OTR) retreading premises in Benoni on Sunday 23 July. The Benoni premise refurbishes tyres used by off-highway equipment such as construction machinery.

“No injuries have been reported and the fire has been brought under control by the local fire brigade. The damage was limited to tyres in the storage area. We do not expect the fire to affect production at the facility.” stated Bridgestone South Africa’s CEO, Gavin Young.

The fire brigade’s initial feedback on the cause of the tyre storage area catching a light is that a veldt fire from outside of the property spread on to the Bridgestone premise, the tyre storage area was on the boarder of the property, and the tyres caught a light.

“We are working with the authorities to confirm the circumstances surrounding the cause of the fire and to assess the damage. We would like to thank the fire brigade & community with assisting on the matter.” Young concluded.
