W series will show in eight Formula 1 weekends in 2021

In 2021, the women of W Series will get their chance to show off their talent on the Formula 1 racing platform.

The W Series and Formula 1 have signed a partnership, which includes an open-wheel series for women. These will act as a support series to eight F1 race weekends next year. These weekends are yet to be decided.

The European-based series will feature Tatuus F3 T-318 single-seat open-wheel cars homologated to FIA F3 specs, according to Autoweek.

Two women from America, Sabre Cook and Shea Holbrook, raced in the 2019 series. The coronavirus pandemic meant nobody raced in the 2020 series.

Prior to the pandemic however, Cook qualified for the 2020 series after finishing 12th in 2019 championship and Holbrook finished 18th.

Speaking to Autoweek Cook said: “W Series pairing with F1 is absolutely fantastic news. I simply cannot wait to race on the same circuits as the greats in F1. It will definitely bring great exposure as well for women in motorsports, and I hope to inspire more to get involved.”

Lella Lombardi started 12 races in the F1 series from 1974-1976. Susie Wolff made a practice session with the Williams Driver Academy in 2014. Tatiana Caledron is a development driver for Alfa Romeo’s F1 team.

Seeing more women in racing, especially at this level, is a step in the right direction for a more inclusive world.
