Hurry, hurry, hurry! The order book has opened for the Porsche 918 Spyder… and, if you snooze, you will almost certainly lose out! But, just a word of warning: don’t be in too much of a rush. Order your car today and you won’t get it before November 2013…

No we are not kidding. Don’t order one if you’re on a budget either; they are priced from Euro 645 000 overseas (so, roughly R6.45 million or so). And, not only do you have to wait a while… but you also may not even get one, because they’re all sold out! That’s because only 918 of these truly incredible cars will be built in Stuttgart.

But, if you are one of the lucky 918 owners, you will be rewarded with an automotive treat. This supercar is a treasure chest of technology – it has a plug-in hybrid drivetrain (which incorporates a mighty V8 engine and also two electric motors). It goes like a steroid-fuelled bat out of hell (it reaches 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds while, amazing, emitting just 70 g/km of CO₂. That’s less than a Prius. It also sips fuel at a rate of a mere three litres per 100 kilometres!
