Why you should never drive in heels
Women love wearing heels, but it can be dangerous if you’re sitting behind the wheel- here’s why…
To avoid crashes and bringing the vehicle to a sudden stop requires not only effective brakes, but also applying enough pressure to the brake pedal. For safe driving the heel of your foot needs to be on the floor to apply the correct controlled pressure on the pedals – this requires you to use your heel as a pivot. The accelerator and brake pedals should be used with the heel on the floor.
Therefore, it’s dangerous for female drivers to drive with heels on. Having the heel of your foot resting on the car floor allows a driver to move from the accelerator to the brake faster and easier and to apply controlled pressure on the pedals.
Why is it so dangerous exactly?
1. High heels elevate your foot, and therefore distorts the ability to measure how much pressure need be applied.
2. Heels give a reduced grip due to an uncomfortable driving position.
3. Your heel can get caught in the floor mat or stuck under the pedals, and you might not be able to brake in time or react swiftly. It’s also more difficult to maintain clutch control with heels.
So girls, take off those heels and rather wear a more comfortable, safer shoe while driving. I know wearing heels sounds glamorous, but trust me, you won’t feel so glamorous after you’ve lost control of the car because you couldn’t brake correctly! You can always put your heels back on when you arrive at you destination!
